The Bare Bones of Oral-Systemic Health: My Osteoporosis Journey - Kristin Evans, BS, MCL, RDH

Osteoporosis is known as a “silent killer” of individuals, especially our female population, and one that I live with everyday. Did you know osteoporosis and periodontal disease have common risk factors? Dental professionals are regularly assessing periodontal bone health, but are we looking beyond the oral cavity for systemic impacts? Our bones store minerals, make blood cells and provide us with protection and support. They are also impacted by our genetics, life choices, environmental loads, and unfortunately other chronic diseases.

Osteoporosis is not regularly talked about in the dental world. My goal is to change this because dental professionals can do more for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, like osteoporosis, by finding the oral-systemic relationship and with early screenings. As we learn to screen, educate, treat, and refer, we can help improve not only oral health but general health outcomes and longevity in individuals just like me.

Learning Objectives
·         Learn all about the “silent killer” osteoporosis, its prevalence in our world today, and my experience fighting this disease.
·         Identify the risk factors for osteoporosis and its correlation with periodontal disease and other systemic diseases.
·         See how early screening tools are essential to help our patients get early intervention.
·         Explore science-based strategies that can help strengthen bones for healthier life outcomes.
